NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY. 3 cash coin. CHONG NING ZHONG BAO in Li (clerical) script. Hartill 16.407 or very similar. This coin was issued by the emperor Hui Zong, between the years 1102-06 AD, which was the "Chong Ning Period." Hui Zong reigned from 1101-25, but Chinese emperors habitually reset the calendar by declaring a new and auspicious "year period." The inscription means "heavy money of the Chong Ning era." The Northern Song Dynasty was a period of much cultural and urban development in China, though not necessarily of military strength. Hui Zong's coinage represents a climax of medieval Chinese coinage, both in quality and quantity. In fact Hui Zong excelled at everything except government. His reign was a renaissance of the arts. He himself was an artist of note. His calligraphy (called Slender Gold Script) is still admired in China. Alas, his foreign policy was very short-sighted. He bribed the Jin to get rid of the pesky barbarian Liao, which they did. Then, thinking the border problem solved, he cut military spending. The Jin kept on coming and besieged the capital (Kaifeng). Huizong resigned in favor of his son. This accomplished nothing and both were captured and carried off (along with the emperor's fabulous art collection) into captivity, where he was given humiliating titles such as "Duke of Muddle Virtue" or "Besotted Duke." His coinage is very attractive and abundant, which is why this is not a very expensive coin. This coin is genuine. I not only got it from a reliable source, but it shows (as fakes do not) plausible wear. The reverse is blank, as is the case with Northern Song coins.
Always happy to combine shipping on multiple orders. This will be mailed between stiff cardboard as a first-class parcel. Note that more than one coin could go into such a parcel with not additional postage charge. The foreign postage charges are a guess. If they prove too high, I will refund the difference.
