Biography
Gifted for drawing and painting, Georges Contaux entered the Boulle school in Paris in the arts and crafts section, mainly focused on sculpture and steel engraving.
It is incorporated in 1911 to 26 th Field Artillery Regiment based in Chartres . During the First World War , he was injured and had two fingers amputated on his left hand.April 27, 1915. He was assigned to the 2 nd aviation group as a sergeant major during the Italian campaign (1915-1918) . It was during this period that he made many small watercolors and blood.
He received an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1921 1 .
Thanks to visits to his former teacher Victor Perrin, bronze turner, in Vigneux-sur-Seine , he fell in love with his granddaughter Juliette that he married her onJuly 12, 1922.
From 1922 to 1923, he worked for the medalist Firmin Pierre Lasserre ( Barraute , 1870 -1943) before settling in Vigneux-sur-Seine as a craftsman sculptor, engraver in medals where he spent the rest of his life.
Its artistic production, which extends from 1930 to 1980, includes 2,550 works divided into 30 official medals, 1,500 religious medals, 890 sports and monument medals and 130 portraits.
He works most often for medalists and publishers. However, he signs with his name some works responding to orders from individuals, associations and companies for commemorative plaques.
Georges Contaux died in Vigneux-sur-Seine, on September 15, 1984.
